The Ultimate Guide to Walking Burleigh Head National Park

A stunning aerial view of the lush Burleigh Head National Park walking track next to the ocean

Nestled between the sparkling ocean and tranquil Tallebudgera Creek, Burleigh Head National Park (or "Jellurgal" in the local Yugambeh language) is the green heart of this beautiful suburb. It's a place where you can escape the hustle, breathe in the fresh sea air, and witness some of the most spectacular views on the entire Gold Coast. This guide covers everything you need to know about the two main **Burleigh Head National Park walking tracks**.

The Two Main Walking Tracks

You have two main choices for exploring the park, each offering a completely different experience. You can even combine them for a longer adventure!

1. The Oceanview Walk

This is the lower track and the easier of the two. It’s a mostly flat, paved path that hugs the coastline, offering constant, stunning views of the waves crashing against the rocks. On a rough day, you can even feel the sea spray!

  • Distance: 1.2 km one way (2.4 km return)
  • Time: Approx. 30 minutes one way
  • Difficulty: Easy (Grade 2). Suitable for prams and wheelchairs with assistance.
  • Perfect for: A relaxed stroll, whale watching, and getting close to the ocean.

2. The Rainforest Circuit

This upper track takes you up into the lush, shady rainforest that covers the headland. It's a bit more challenging with some steeper sections, but you'll be rewarded with the sounds of nature and a visit to the park's best lookout.

  • Distance: 2.3 km circuit
  • Time: Approx. 45-60 minutes
  • Difficulty: Moderate (Grade 3). Some steep sections and stairs.
  • Perfect for: A proper bushwalk, spotting wildlife, and reaching Tumgun Lookout.

Don't Miss: Tumgun Lookout

Accessible via the Rainforest Circuit, Tumgun Lookout is the jewel of the park. From here, you get a breathtaking panoramic view south along Palm Beach and towards Coolangatta. From June to November, this is a prime spot for spotting migrating humpback whales – so don't forget your binoculars!

The Jellurgal Aboriginal Centre

For a much deeper understanding of the park, consider a tour with the Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre. The local Yugambeh people have been the custodians of this land for thousands of years. A guided walk will introduce you to the "Dreaming" stories of the mountain and its rich cultural history.
