Burleigh Heads with Kids: Playgrounds, Wildlife and Beach Days

For younger children, start with Justins Park and a short beach outing. For a bigger playground adventure, head south to Palm Beach Parklands. School-age children can add Currumbin wildlife, a beginner surf lesson or a headland walk. Pick one main outing each day and leave room for the beach, meals and a rest at your accommodation.
Justins Park: the easy first-day choice
Justins Park sits on the Burleigh beachfront and has swings, slides and climbing equipment. It is a useful starting point when children need to play after travelling and the adults do not want another transfer.
Our suggested plan is playground time, a snack and a short foreshore walk. Finish with something to eat around James Street rather than adding a second attraction. On a busy day, a simple meeting point and a short route make this easier than spreading the family across the beach and shops.
Palm Beach Parklands: a pirate-playground outing
Palm Beach Parklands at 945 Gold Coast Highway has a pirate-themed playground, broad paths and space for a picnic. Dune Café is within the parklands. This is south of Burleigh near Currumbin Creek, not the Tallebudgera Creek picnic area.
Choose it for a playground-led morning with food nearby. Bring a ball or picnic and allow the children to set the pace. The playground can fill the morning, with a picnic or café lunch before returning to Burleigh.
Currumbin: animals, a train and keeper talks
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary offers a change from beach days: lorikeets, the miniature railway and Lost Valley’s rainforest animals give children several different things to focus on. Select a few priorities from the daily programme rather than trying to see every presentation.
The 8am lorikeet session is before the main sanctuary opens at 9am. An early start works for some families; others may prefer to arrive later and finish with the 4pm feeding. Children who dislike birds close to them can watch before deciding whether to participate. Leave paid animal encounters as optional extras, with their own age rules.
A first surf lesson for school-age children
Our beginner surfing guide compares Currumbin Alley, Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise. Currumbin Alley has lessons with child groups, while Broadbeach lists school-holiday sessions for ages eight to 14. A private lesson is another option when the family wants to learn together.
Tell the school your children’s ages and swimming confidence before choosing a product. Then keep the rest of the morning light: learning to paddle and stand can be enough of an adventure without a second booked activity afterwards.
The headland and Tallebudgera Creek
For children who enjoy walking, use the Oceanview route towards Echo Beach as a destination-and-return outing. The national park guide explains the route and the steeper alternative to Tumgun Lookout. If cultural stories are the draw, consider a guided Jellurgal experience instead of a separate walk.
For a creek picnic, compare the two banks in our Tallebudgera guide. Use the marked patrolled swimming area when operating and supervise children closely; tidal water is not a toddler pool. Stay on formed park tracks and change the water plan after heavy rain or warnings.
Rainy-day art at HOTA
HOTA’s Children’s Gallery provides an indoor alternative in Surfers Paradise. Minna Gilligan: True Colours is scheduled for 12 September 2026–28 February 2027. The exhibition uses collage-inspired colour, games and creative activities to invite children and adults to play together. It opens after this guide’s 9 September check.
Check the gallery programme for your travel dates and include the return trip from Burleigh. For a shorter local day, pack a favourite book or small travel game so a café stop can also be a break from the rain.
Choose accommodation around the family day
A kitchen and separate sleeping space can matter more than a long facilities list. Compare the walk to meals, the beach and your likely transport stop in our Burleigh accommodation guide. If you plan to use a pool, check whether it is heated for your season and whether there are any closure notices.
Our three-day itinerary is a starting point you can shorten. Book one big outing, leave a quieter day beside it, and keep enough space in the schedule to repeat what the children enjoyed.
