Three Days in Burleigh Heads: Beach, Headland and Currumbin

Spend your first day getting to know Burleigh’s beach and town centre, your second around the headland and Tallebudgera Creek, and your third on a Currumbin outing. This itinerary leaves room for a long lunch and time by the water. The days are interchangeable, so put the outdoor walk on the best-weather day and match the markets to their actual calendar.
Day one morning: coffee, the beach and James Street
Start with a walk along the beachfront, taking in the sweep of sand and the headland at its southern end. Walk along the foreshore, then turn into James Street for coffee at Quest and a browse at the boutiques. KIVARI opens later on Sunday, so a beach-first order makes sense.
If breakfast is the main event, substitute Paddock Bakery and leave shopping until afterwards. Pick up pastries or bread for the apartment if you want an easy breakfast the next day.
Day one afternoon: leave space for Burleigh
Spend the afternoon at the beach, with a swim between the flags when patrols and conditions allow, or simply a book and a walk. On Saturday, the school market runs 7am–noon, so place it in the morning instead. On the last Sunday of the month, the beachfront market runs 8am–2pm. Our market guide explains the two locations.
For dinner, choose Maman or Jimmy Wah’s for a sharing-style meal, or reserve Rick Shores if the beachfront setting is the occasion. A daylight meal makes more of that view; dinner can then be something simpler.
Day two morning: walk the headland or take a cultural tour
Choose the Oceanview track for a coastal walk towards Echo Beach, or the Rainforest circuit for Tumgun Lookout. Our national park guide compares distances and terrain. Start from Goodwin Terrace if you are based in central Burleigh and leave time for pauses, not just the advertised walking duration.
For cultural interpretation, book the two-hour Jellurgal Walkabout instead of doing a separate self-guided circuit. The centre is on the creek side at 1711 Gold Coast Highway, so check your meeting point before setting off. The guided option is for learning about the headland as well as walking it.
Day two afternoon: Tallebudgera Creek
Follow the morning with a picnic or shoreline stop at Tallebudgera Creek. Echo Beach suits a walking visit from the national park; the Palm Beach side has the creekside picnic facilities. Choose one as your base rather than carrying everything between both banks.
For swimming, use the marked patrolled area and follow current signs. The creek is tidal, and heavy rain can affect water quality. If water conditions are poor, keep the picnic on land and return to town for a relaxed meal.
Day three: choose wildlife or your first wave
At Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, build the day around the lorikeets, keeper presentations, miniature train and Lost Valley. Our suggested allowance is four to six hours with breaks. The train and keeper presentations give the day a mix of riding, walking and watching.
If you would rather get in the water, book a beginner lesson at Currumbin Alley. The 90-minute group option leaves room for lunch and a quieter afternoon back in Burleigh. For a departure day, stay local unless your flight time comfortably allows the outing and return trip.
Wet weather and what to book ahead
Swap the headland day for an indoor outing at HOTA if its exhibitions interest you. The Children’s Gallery lists Minna Gilligan: True Colours from 12 September 2026 to 28 February 2027; the exhibition combines colourful collage-inspired surroundings with games and creative activities for children and adults. Reserve your cultural tour, surf lesson and any destination restaurant first. Keep unscheduled beach time around them.
